1. determine tax on the meal if the rate is 8.375%
first, move the decimal 2 places on the 8.375% to 0.08375
second, multiply 47.68 x .08375 = 3.9932
2. Find total price of bill
add 47.68 + 3.99 = 51.67
3. determine the amount of tip if you want to leave 20%
two ways to do this
10% rule 5.16 +5.16 = 10.32
or multiply .2 x 51.67 = 10.334
4. Find total after tip and tax
add tip to total after tax (51.67 + 10.35 = 61.99)
5. Find the price each friend will pay
divide the total after tax and tip by 3 (61.99/3 = 20.66)
